Master of the Crossroads

Èṣù

Èṣù is always the first Orisha to be honoured, before any ritual, prayer, or important undertaking. He is the messenger between the realms, the keeper of the crossroads, the one who opens or closes every path. Without his blessing, no exchange with the divine can take place.

Èṣù

Èṣù has long been misunderstood, above all by colonial missionaries who mapped the Christian devil onto him and left a caricature that has nothing to do with the Yoruba original. Èṣù is not evil. He enforces cosmic law: those who act with integrity find his paths open, while those who act with deceit find every path closed.

He is a trickster in the true sense, not cruel but relentlessly honest. His tricks reveal truth by stripping away pretence. He stands at every threshold, every decision, and every meeting of roads, carrying messages between humans and Orishas in both directions.

His colours are red and black, and his sacred number is twenty-one. He belongs to crossroads, marketplaces, and doorways. Offerings to him come first, placed at a doorway or crossroad, and always given with respect and honest intention.
